Minister Calls for Better Ventilation to Lower Radon Risks

Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the Minister of Science and Environment, urged Ghanaians to enhance home ventilation. This measure aims to reduce exposure to radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas linked to lung cancer.

She made this statement during her visit to the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC). There, she engaged with experts about their work. She also explored ways for stronger collaboration on environmental radiation risks.

Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings called on the Commission to expedite legislation protecting the public from radon exposure.

Eric Tetteh Glover, an executive member of GAEC, explained that radon is released from rocks and soil. It can accumulate in buildings, especially in poorly ventilated areas. He warned that long-term exposure increases lung cancer risk.

Mr. Glover noted that Ghana lacks specific laws requiring radon inspections during construction. The Commission is working to fill this gap and manage radon risks in buildings.

Experts emphasize that improving ventilation can lower indoor radon levels. However, they highlight the importance of testing for elevated concentrations of the gas in buildings.
