Kwabenya Traders Rally Against 24-Hour Market Proposal

Traders at Kwabenya Market oppose plans for a 24-hour market initiative. Some wore red clothing to protest what they see as a threat to their livelihoods.

They argue against any eviction from parts of the market for this initiative by the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GEMA). The traders believe the market is large enough to accommodate both existing vendors and the new 24-hour market.

In an interview with Adom News, many traders expressed concern. Many are single mothers who fear losing their income and worsening poverty for their families. They claim that some shops have already been marked for removal, raising alarm among them.

The traders seek reassurance about their livelihoods from the Assembly. They are appealing for reconsideration of the planned evictions and want discussions on a solution that allows both initiatives to coexist.

Some traders allege that officials assaulted them during a previous meeting aimed at resolving the issue. The affected vendors demand more engagement with the Assembly, emphasizing that their livelihoods must be prioritized before any demolition occurs.
