Reading is our hobby. Studying Classics is an instinctive pastime. We explored Quintus Tullius Cicero’s work: “How to Win an Election: An Ancient Guide for Modern Politicians.” This manual was meant for his brother Cicero during his consul campaign around 65 BC. It advised repaying debts, promising everything, exploiting weaknesses, flattering voters, and maintaining a visible presence.
In Homer’s Iliad (Book 6), Glaucus recalls advice from his father Hippolochus before going to war: “Always excel; surpass others; don’t disgrace your ancestors.” These themes were evident at the NPP delegates conference in Kumasi last weekend. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) chose Kumasi for the 2026 Delegates’ Conference on Saturday, October 3rd. Delegates from all sixteen regions attended along with media personnel.
Baba Yara Sports Stadium buzzed with activity starting at 8:00 am. Voting was expected between 9 am and 10 am. Mahamudu Bawumia arrived at approximately 2:00 pm. Our friend Obiri Yeboah, a founding member, felt too tired to stand in the sun.
Voting began at 6:00 pm with four candidates for Chairman: Boakye Agyarko, John Boadu, Paul Afoko, and Sammy Crabbe. Each candidate had strengths and weaknesses. Boakye Agyarko served as Energy Minister from early 2017 until August 2018. He had strong business connections but was sometimes seen as “adamant.”
John Boadu had extensive experience within the party as National Organiser and General Secretary until July 2022 when Justin Frimpong Kodua took over. His past included controversies highlighted in the discredited Agyapadie Book regarding his performance and personal issues.
Paul Afoko previously defeated Stephen Ntim and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey in the 2014 contest despite challenges related to his northern connections with Bawumia. Sammy Crabbe advocated for reforms within the NPP after the party’s electoral defeat in 2024.
Thirteen candidates contested for Vice Chairmanship including Mustapha Abdul Hamid and Kojo Fosu-Boadu among others. Four candidates vied for General Secretary: incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua, Eugene Antwi, Charles Dwamena, and Silvester Tetteh.
The National Treasurer position had four contestants while six competed for National Organiser. Six candidates also ran for National Youth Organiser while two contested for National Women’s Organiser. The Nasara Organiser position saw four contestants while Dennis Miracles Aboagye won unopposed as National Communication Officer.
In total, there were forty-six candidates across various positions. After voting concluded, John Boadu won National Chairman by defeating Boakye Agyarko with a vote count of 2888 to 2408. Justin Frimpong Kodua secured General Secretary with 4468 votes.
Kojo Fosu Boadu became First Vice Chairman while Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) was elected Second Vice Chairman alongside Nana Akomea as Third Vice Chairman. Nii Kwartey Titus-Glover was named National Organiser; Hawa Koomson became National Women’s Organiser; Abanga Fuseini won as National Youth Organiser; Alfred Kojo Thompson took on Treasurer duties; Alhaji Mohammed Ali Suraj became Nasara Coordinator.
The newly elected executives were sworn into office except Henry Nana Boakye and Nana Akomea due to rumors of position swaps that they denied despite assertions from Kojo Fosu Boadu about their collaboration.
John Boadu delivered an electrifying acceptance speech thanking supporters and extending friendship to competitors while emphasizing unity within the party moving forward towards victory in 2028.
Bawumia remarked on forming a winning team but some expressed concerns about this outcome being detrimental to NPP’s future prospects following John Boadu’s election over Boakye Agyarko.
Dr. Aryeh noted that by 2028 there would be scrutiny over government spending including GHC100 billion allocated to projects like the National Cathedral amid other controversies during Dr. Bawumia’s vice presidency.
Hawa Koomson stated her readiness for battle against opposition parties using strong rhetoric reminiscent of ancient justice principles which some view critically given historical contexts of revenge cycles leading only to further harm rather than resolution.
Critics argue that NPP leadership dismisses objective criticism labeling dissenters negatively especially those expelled from party ranks highlighting internal tensions regarding governance issues under Akufo-Addo’s administration which have drawn public ire over unfinished projects totaling significant financial resources without accountability measures established thus far according Arthur Kennedy’s observations on current political climate dynamics affecting upcoming elections significantly impacting voter sentiments moving forward into future contests ahead where participation remains crucial across all levels within party structures themselves ensuring inclusivity throughout decision-making processes involved therein ultimately shaping overall direction taken collectively together toward achieving shared goals effectively realized through collaborative efforts undertaken consistently over time reflecting core values upheld steadfastly throughout history itself guiding actions
