Government Pauses Ban on Preaching and Hawking in Moving Trotros

Reports from GhanaWeb indicate that the government has suspended a new road traffic rule. This rule aimed to prohibit preaching and selling goods inside moving trotros and buses. The suspension follows public concerns, especially from religious leaders. They questioned how the ban might impact evangelism.

According to myjoyonline.com, a high-ranking government source confirmed this decision. However, the government has not specified how long the suspension will last or when it will make a final decision on the rule.

The new Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), classify preaching and hawking in moving vehicles as a nuisance. These activities are common in trotros and buses, where preachers share messages and vendors sell items during trips.

The restrictions have sparked concerns about their impact on religious practices. This has led to calls for further consideration of the measure. Under Regulation 141 of L.I. 2519, violators could face fines between GH¢120 and GH¢600 or up to eight months in jail.

The previous Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), also prohibited these activities in moving vehicles. The new regulation continues this restriction but specifies a maximum prison term of eight months.
