GAF to Officially Transfer Accra-Kumasi Expressway Right-of-Way Clearance

President John Dramani Mahama will attend a ceremony on Sunday, 14 September 2026. He will serve as the Special Guest of Honour for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Roads and Highways. It is in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Ejisu Kwaso in the Ashanti Region.

This ceremony follows GAF Engineers’ successful completion of the corridor-clearing exercise. They cleared a right-of-way of 175.6 kilometres in just 19 weeks. This was one week ahead of the planned schedule.

GAF engineers worked alongside the Ministries of Defence, Finance, and Roads and Highways. They faced dense vegetation and challenging terrain along the proposed six-lane dual carriageway corridor. This corridor runs through parts of Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions.

GAF described their achievement as “delivering on mission ahead of schedule.” They highlighted their personnel’s engineering capability and support for national infrastructure projects.

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a flagship project under the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme.

Once completed, this modern six-lane highway aims to reduce travel time between Ghana’s two largest cities from six hours to about two hours. It will ease congestion, improve road safety, and boost economic activity along the route.

The formal handover on 14 September marks a key milestone for this project. It clears the way for detailed design finalization and contractor procurement for main construction works.
